Let's Plan That Wedding During Quarantine!

Yeah, so we have been quarantined for a solid three weeks now! We hope everybody is hanging in there. Here at Gruene Estate, we are still doing tours virtually, working on upcoming weddings, and maintaining Gruene and New Braunfels’ original historic open-air chapel and wedding venue. Since you are stuck at home, chances are you have already gone through all three seasons of Ozarks, the first season of Tiger King, and of course every season of Sex and The City and Friday Night Lights. Fortunately, there’s still plenty of time to do some wedding planning (and for those of you not yet engaged, some wedding dreaming). Not only is planning during this time a nice distraction, but it’s also a rare opportunity to get ahead. We’ve put together a few resources that will help plan your wedding while in waiting!

There’s no time like quarantine time to start working on that guest list! Take out your trusty white board and start putting some names down into three categories. The “haves”, the “maybes”, and the “have nots”. Classifying guest into these three categories allows you to organize your thoughts, so that you and your significant other can have conversations about who is and who isn’t going to receive an invite. These can be tough conversations, but it’s a great opportunity to think about cost and how big you want your event to be.

Now is the perfect time to fine tune your wedding and really hone in on your wedding design goals. Way back when, this required cutting pages out of magazines and making collages with glue and poster board (this is still a really fun to do). We are lucky to have the never ending, super deep picture resource of Pinterest. Pinterest is a great place to start and you can actually create boards that are color toned. Organize your décor ideas, you can be detail oriented on all the aspects from color, to theme, to DIY projects. Comb through your contracts and/or proposals and get a grasp on keeping and setting a budget.

Hopefully, you are quarantined with your better half, and if this is the case, then start working on your registry. There is a wide array of online registry’s that couples can take advantage of from the computer. Sure, it’s lots of fun to go to stores and use that gun, but in the meantime, there are some great websites like Blueprint Registry. This site allows you to add gifts from any store on the world wide web and consolidate them into one place. This is one more item that you can cross off your to do list!

The Chandelier of Gruene

When we talk to most of our brides and ask them what is most important to them, their response usually involves something in regards to the guest experience. Work on the fun and sentimental details of you wedding day: personalized wedding favors, a special vendor to enhance the experience (cigar roller, beer burros, etc.), or maybe put together a small booklet of your favorite love poems to give to guests. The options are endless here!

Give people something to look forward to. Stay positive with a wedding countdown. The amount of negative news and information seems endless at the moment. Nothing rallies people like a wedding and the happiness that the day brings. Give the important people in your life some good news by creating a wedding countdown. Yourweddingcountdown.com is a good place to start and there several great apps in the apple store that will help you create this!

After you binge watch all the Netflix you can stand, take advantage of this time to refine those wedding plans. This quarantine is a great opportunity to get ahead and organize your wedding day. Make sure you have all your details in order, and take some of your “to do” items off the list. This will soon pass, and your wedding will be here before you know it!

It takes months and months of planning a wedding. Fortunately, our wonderful staff at Gruene Estate is always there to answer questions, get to know our brides on a deeper level, and enjoy watching them go through the process of planning their beautiful day. As venue operators it is an amazing opportunity to see each and every one of them walk to the alter and exchange vows in an intimate and meaningful way. Since we see witness couples do this on a weekly, we feel like we are experts in art of the vow, and can give you some sage advice on writing and exchanging them.

There is nothing wrong with finding inspiration from other places and sources. Each couple wants to come up with their own vows that are unique to them, but look for inspiration in easy to find places to get you pointed in the right direction. The helpful place to start would be within the religion or faith that you practice. In Christian wedding ceremonies, a common example would be:

I, _____, take you, ______, to be my wedded husband. With deepest joy I come into my new life with you. As you have pledged to me your life and love, so I too happily give you my life, and in confidence submit myself to your headship as to the Lord. As is the church in her relationship to Christ, so I will be to you. _____, I will live first unto our God and then unto you, loving you, obeying you, caring for you and ever seeking to please you. God has prepared me for you and so I will ever strengthen, help, comfort, and encourage you. Therefore, throughout life, no matter what may be ahead of us, I pledge to you my life as an obedient and faithful wife.”

These basic vows give you a nice foundation which will allow you customize them however you choose. Add your personal touch to the exchange of the vows.

Considering the tone of your vows is an important part of the planning process. Take time to sit down with your partner before you write them and decide a few things: are they going to be humorous, poetic, serious? Do you want to write them together or maybe separately and surprise each other?   We have seen a trend of couples writing their vows together, but writing a personal note to each other that is exchanged prior to the ceremony for their eyes only. This way, you get the best of both worlds and it creates a special moment prior to the days events.

Do you struggle with writer’s block? Create a basic outline of what you want to say, take time to jot down a few notes about your relationship and think about the feelings you felt when you first met. Have you been through hard times? What emotions do you feel when you think about the other person? How does that person inspire you? Is there a funny story or something that is endearing about your soon to be husband? The options are limitless here. The important thing is to take some time to think about what you want to say, and how you want to communicate your feelings to your spouse.

Write out your vows and avoid the clichés, and refine your work. It is ok to use other sources for inspiration, but make sure that you are not relying on phrases or sayings that are used over and over. Make the vows personal, and use the list of ideas and characteristics that you previously jotted down to write out your vows and create first draft.   Read it out loud and practice it several times. Reading it out loud will help you make the appropriate adjustments and correct awkward, repetitive, or unwanted phrases. Your goal here should be to create personally written set of vows that are around 2 minutes in length, meaningful, and not repetitive.

After you have completed your vows and made the alterations to your liking, rewrite a clean draft without the notes, mark-ups, and cross outs. This is a great opportunity to transfer your vows into a small journal, scroll, or other unique type of medium that adds an authentic and personal touch to your exchanging of the vows!\

Exchanging your vows on your wedding day is one of the most intimate parts of your ceremony. Having a well thought out and edited set of vows is a sweet way to communicate how much you are in love with your spouse. Writing your own vows might seem daunting and difficult, but it'll be so worth it when you're at the altar.

Floral Selection, Creating That Hill Country Wedding Vision

You’ve been visualizing your wedding since you were a little girl. As you have grown, your vision has grown with you. Somewhere in that dream, there are floral arrangements, greenery, or even now a days, dried flowers. When planning your wedding, certain elements of the process will bring your vision to life. Well thought out floral design bridges the gap between venue space and nature, wowing your guest and putting your signature touch on the event. Flowers are one of your most important design decisions!

We are going on year number eight at Gruene Estate, and we have seen so many floral arrangements there really is no end to the limitless options and design nuances. As venue operators, it is fun getting to know brides and their personalities, and then seeing that translate through to their wedding day. It shows up the most through the décor and floral arrangement styles that they choose. Flowers as a median, express emotions: friendship, love, happiness, and trust just to name a few. Since we are in the Texas Hill Country, we’re lucky enough to be reminded of the joy and love that flowers bring every spring when our Texas wildflowers bloom.

When you start the floral design process, think about your color palette first, and make sure that you are choosing flowers that fit those color options. As a general rule of thumb, Roses, Tulips, Carnations, and Forget-Me-Nots generally symbolize love, while Sunflowers and Chrysanthemums express happiness and joy. Whichever flowers you choose, make sure you are communicating what you want your wedding vibe to be by choosing the right species. Of course, choosing the right florist is important, and they can help you create that wedding vision.

There are so many fabulous florist in the San Antonio and Austin wedding scene. Different factors to consider when choosing vendors depends on your budget, style, and personality. It is a good idea and a time saver to have a mood board and color palette already selected when you start your vendor search. Bring swatches of your brides maids dresses, create Pinterest boards, cut out pages of magazines. It’s your job as a bride to clearly articulate your design goals to whomever you choose. You should be comfortable with this person, so be open to a dialogue and suggestions. Find that perfect balance between someone who is willing to listen to your ideas, and give you constructive feedback on alternative plans and design. Also, make sure they let you know if your budget and vision are realistic. They are the professionals and they might look at the design and suggest that you need more greenery or some other element that will make your vision really stand apart.

Let’s not forget about greenery! Wedding greenery is extremely versatile. It adds a perfect balance to the bright colors of floral arrangements. Offering subtle organic tones that soften the bright colors of pop, greenery is the perfect ying to flowers yang! In addition, they are typically very affordable. It’s why we are obsessed with greenery for weddings! It also gives you the option to skip the florals all together and just go green. Or, you could focus on bulking up your arrangements with affordable green wedding fillers like ever popular wedding eucalyptus, wedding ferns or smilax. The options are pretty much endless, and this is a great option for the bride that is the minimalist, or looking for a more modern touch. There is something about greenery that adds such a boho organic feel to the décor of an event, it is really hard to describe. Also, being that we are an event venue in Texas, Smilax is a wild vine that only grows in East Texas. Incorporating locally grown and native plants into your event, gives your event that signature Texas touch!

Flowers are an essential part of your wedding because they can be found in almost every element of your event, and they set the tone for wedding day! Choosing the right vendors to help you communicate your vision is an important step in the wedding planning process. Using other unique elements like greenery in conjunction with flowers can bring your lifelong wedding dreams to reality!

Your Not Gonna Believe This Dress - Frank and Alexa's New Braunfels Wedding

Ya'll, like most everybody else, we have been stuck inside for the last week and are taking shelter while the Corona Virus runs it's course.  We hope that each and everyone of you is safe and sound.  The silver lining in all of this, is that we have been able to sit down in front of the computer and do some video editing.  Since most of us are stuck at home, we'll continue to do our best to bring ya'll some stellar wedding content on all of our social media channels.

Today's video was shot last weekend at Gruene Estate, when Frank and Alexa were married in our original open air chapel.  We loved everything about this wedding, and we are especially in love with Alexa's dress.  The mermaid cut lace gown with full length train is AMAZING!  This feminine style dress is tastefully form-fitting. Mermaid evening gowns follow your silhouette to the mid thigh or calf and then flare out at the bottom.  A bride's gown really makes her the center of attention and Alexa chose the right one!

Weddings are about the little details and we love how Frank and Alexa took the information from their wedding program and transfered it onto an antique window.  Subtle touches like these, add to the authenticity of an event.  When we created Gruene Estate, we created a venue like no other, because every building on the property is old or was constructed from reclaimed materials.  The original Gruene family farm has has soul, so when brides choose decor that adds texture, authenticity, and a soulful vibe, their event really stands out and pops.  There are so many unique ways for brides to inject their pesonality into their wedding.

Elevating the guest experience was an important part of the day for Alexa and Frank, and they did just that by offering guest a photo booth wall.  An alternative to a traditional photo booth with a one dimensional background, their photo wall was covered with greenery that added texture and made for a beautiful back drop.  It was also setup in our patio area, so guest didn't have to leave the event to take photos!

The whole day was fabulous, and this short video is just another one of our in house videos that give brides a behind scenes look at weddings at Gruene Estate.  We're still doing tours and booking weddings, so if you feel so inclined, tell us about your wedding and come tour the property!
